Road salt is an emerging pollutant in snow-belt regions. In this talk, Vicky Kelly will cover the history of road salt use, where we find salt in the environment today, some co-occurring issues related to road salt such as lead in water, and how to reduce road salt pollution without sacrificing safety.
Vicky Kelly is the Manager of Cary's Environmental Monitoring Program. She is interested in studying and writing about the legacy of long-term road salt use, seasonal dynamics and best management practices of road salt, climate change impact on atmospheric deposition, precipitation chemistry, remote sensing, and landscape monitoring of soil water content. She is a co-author of the report Road Salt: The Problem, The Solution, and How to Get There.
